Why You Need A Great, Blockbuster Movie Trailer
According to the MPAA, 700 films were released in 2019. But that's only movies seeking a rating. Sundance Film Festival alone—each year—receives over 3,000 feature film submissions. Never mind YouTube, where millions of users upload 500 hours of video per minute—every minute. Hour after hour. That’s 30,000 hours, per hour. All of it for free. Of course, those movies can't be as good as yours! And you would probably be right. 99% of movies released each year are most likely junk, and will disappoint whomever watches it. But that does not matter.
Movies Are Not A Competition Of Quality
Movies require the consumption of time. Their digestion requires even more. It takes experience to find out something is bad or good. And even at that, no one really knows. All those movies released, regardless of their quality, require a consumption not of themselves—but of time. You're not competing against THOSE movies. You're competing against the tens of thousands of hours those movies themselves individually command in attention. Which, when tabulated, would require over a single year of constant viewing just to get through. Five thousand movies would equate to, roughly, 10,000 hours of film. That’s 400 days of straight viewing.
Movies Succeed Because Of The Trailer
Without trailers, all movies would perish upon release. Those thousands of new films would cannibalize each other into oblivion; audiences would simply give up out of confusion. The world of film would concentrate around a blurry composite, a veritable trash-heap of camouflaged cinema, a veiled, errant haze of which only the most idle would dare penetrate.
Without trailers, Hollywood would cease to exist. For a movie to have any kind of chance, it requires a well-oiled, highly refined movie trailer. There’s no other way. It is only through a trailer that a movie does any kind of speaking to any kind of public. It is only through the trailer that a movie communicates its existence, entices, and directs.
The Trailer Is King!
My great friend is fond of saying, "it's all about the trailer." He pointed this out to me in the summer of 2007 when the trailer for the movie "Transformers" was dominating theaters. Remember his words—they will help you find lots of success in the film industry! If you have a movie, then you need a trailer. And it needs to be a great trailer. It may be the only thing anyone ever sees of your movie! It's the only chance your movie has!
Only So Many Spots
If you need a trailer, get in touch with me at tom@trailers.com. But hurry, beecuase I can only work on so many at a time. Film festivals and film markets seem to be my busiest season, so keep that in mind. Now a days, this is all year round.
If You're Unsure...
If you're not a hundred percent sure about hiring me to make your movie trailer, that's OK! But for the sake of your movie, hire SOMEONE. Whoever will make the best trailer for you. Hire them. Or, get my book "How To Make Blockbuster Movie Trailers" and make your trailer right. When I was younger, I tried making trailers without knowing the tools listed in that book. I ended up just taking more time than necessary and made a poor trailer. It took years of training to get great at it. So—whatever you do—make sure you get a GREAT trailer! There's a ton of competition out there!
